Ivar Wickman's classical work on the epidemiology of poliomyelitis. Wickman was the first to clearly prove the transmissibility of the disease, and in particular the role of infected persons without manifest neurological disease in that transmission. Of note, his discovery predated (and probably motivated) the discovery of the causative virus.
